fairmeeting is based on Jitsi Meet—one of the world's most widely used open-source video conferencing solutions. Jitsi has been actively developed since 2003, is completely WebRTC-based, and is one of the few solutions expressly recommended for use in higher education by data protection authorities, such as the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

How does ordering through the DFN framework agreement work?
As partners under the DFN framework agreement, member institutions of the German Research Network can place orders directly with fairkom via an EVB-IT service contract without having to conduct their own tender process. What sets fairmeeting apart from the public meet.jit.si platform?
The public instance meet.jit.si is operated by the U.S. company 8x8, runs on AWS servers, and has required registration since August 2023 (Google, GitHub, or Facebook account required). fairmeeting runs on its own Kubernetes cluster in Germany, without requiring participants to have an account, without cookies, and without external services. The fairkom team creates its own images and is more stable in operation than most Jitsi instances. We see ourselves as part of the global Jitsi developer community and are actively involved, for example, in the shared forum.
Is fairmeeting truly GDPR-compliant, or is it simply hosted in Europe?
Both. Servers located in Germany. Data processing agreement (DPA) in accordance with Article 28 of the GDPR, provided free of charge. TOM documentation available upon request. No connections to external services. No non-technical cookies. The Berlin Data Protection Authority expressly recommends Jitsi Meet for use in higher education.
What is the difference between “fairmeeting” (Jitsi) and “fairteaching” (BigBlueButton)?
fairmeeting (Jitsi) is ideal for spontaneous meetings and collaboration—supporting more than 1,000 participants with maximum flexibility. fairteaching (BigBlueButton) is designed for structured teaching formats: webinars, lectures, and exams—featuring user roles, uploading of presentation slides, and an excellent whiteboard. Both are included in the university package and complement each other. Your teaching staff has the choice!
Can people without an account participate?
Yes. Room owners share a link—external guests click on it, optionally enter a name, and are immediately admitted to the room. No account or installation is required. The lobby, PIN, or password are managed by the moderators.
Is there an option for an on-premises installation?
Yes, in addition to our SaaS solution “fairmeeting,” fairkom can also set up a local installation at your site—including security measures, security configuration, updates, and ongoing support. We understand how important this is for organizations with strict IT security policies or for highly sensitive research projects, and we offer comprehensive support.
How much does support cost—are there any SLA guarantees?

Is it possible to log in using single sign-on with AAI or eduGain?
Our central identity service, fairlogin, allows users to log in using an account from any university or research institution. We have entered into a service agreement with ACOnet, a sister organization of DFN, for all of our fairapps. This enables federation via GEANT/eduGain—if needed, the service simply needs to be activated at your institution or integrated into the login portal. However, we can also establish a direct SAML or OIDC connection and offer expertise in this area, particularly regarding Keycloak, which we use to implement federations.
Is the DFN scheduler also from fairkom?
Yes, the DFN Scheduler is a specialized version of TERMINO.
TERMINO was originally developed by the fairkom team for public administration in Austria. The technical infrastructure is currently being updated, and additional features are being developed.
How can fairmeeting be integrated into a Nextcloud?
Since the development of the Jitsi app for Nextcloud has been discontinued, we have added several new features and released it as the fairmeeting app. The app can be configured so that, when a new event is created, a link to a video conference is included in the location field or in the description. This can be done for every event, or only when a specific keyword - such as “fairmeeting” - has been noted in the description.
